The Indian aviation industry will benefit immediately if the approximately 450 'unused' airports around the country are turned instead into low cost carrier airports, said a delegate at the recently concluded Indian Travel Congress in Hyderabad.
Mostly grass strips and generally referred to as “bush strips,” the airports are mostly not utilized. With lower airport charges it would boost the low cost carrier market in India.
"The industry's future growth and expansion is in serving smaller towns, or building low cost carrier terminals," said G. Gopinath, managing director of Air Deccan, a low cost carrier pioneer. "City airports can have a budget terminal to avoid monopolies."
