HONG KONG - Big Island awakens

TWICE as large as Hong Kong, Lantau (the name means Big Island Mountain in Cantonese) was for years a land that time had forgotten.
Then came the opening of the Chek Lap Kok airport in 1998, which was the impetus that propelled the island into the 21st century. As part of airport related projects, a superhighway was built along the island’s long-neglected northern coast and a new satellite town rose at nearby Tung Chung. Since the opening of Disneyland in September last year, the pace has quickened. Chek Lap Kok is feverishly being updated to cement its regional aviation hub status. A second terminal with extensive retail outlets will double its capacity. Last year the airport handled 40.7 million passengers.
