VIETNAM - island set for makeover as tourism paradise by 2020

Vietnam plans to turn Phu Quoc island off its southern tip into a major tourist and economic hub by 2020.
In a decision announced Monday setting out the plan, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said this would create an impetus for the country’s tourism development.
A meeting to unveil the PM’s decision Monday heard that the country’s largest island would have 18,000 hotel rooms, attract 2 to 3 million tourists a year – with foreigners accounting for 35 to 40 percent –and earn annual revenues of $771 million from tourism services.
The development of tourism on Phu Quoc island would also provide jobs for more than 110,000 people, heard the meeting organized by the Vietnam National Administration for Tourism (VNAT) and Kien Giang province where Phu Quoc is situated.
