With the entry of many foreign airlines on the cards, the Vietnamese skies seem set for fierce competition.
Australian flag carrier Qantas said last month it had signed an agreement to buy 30 per cent of Pacific Airlines, Viet Nam’s second carrier. The 30 per cent, the maximum allowed under Vietnamese law, will cost it US$50 million.
Qantas’s chief financial officer Peter Gregg said the Australian airline would help Pacific reposition itself as a budget carrier both internationally and within Viet Nam. Qantas will have representation on Pacific’s board.
