BANGKOK - BMA devising development plan for the East of BKK

Thaisnews.com, 30 September, 2006
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is working on a plan to develop the eastern region of Bangkok that is connected to Suvarnabhumi Airport. The plan will also develop eco-tourism in the East of Bangkok.

The Bangkok Governor, Mr. Apirak Kosayodhin, said the name of this development plan is the Garden City of the East. The areas involved include Lad Krabang, Prawet, Nong Jok, Minburi and Klong Sam Wa, and these areas are nearby Suvarnabhumi Airport. The communities in Lad Krabang will be developed to complement with the operation of the new airport. Eco-tourism and transport routes for passengers will be worked out. As for the areas in Prawet, environmental-friendly accommodations for people in the high and middles classes will be constructed.

Nevertheless, the Bangkok Governor said the areas in the East of Bangkok are wetlands, and the officials are working with the Irrigation Department in managing the water in this region such as increasing the number of drainage canals. The water level will be controlled especially during the rainy season. He said the officials are prepared to deal with the influences from Typhoon Xangsane next month, and the floodwater will be drained into Bangpakong River and the Gulf of Thailand.
